WHAT IS SHIATSU?
Shiatsu, often described as acupuncture without needles, balances the physical and emotional body. It uses comfortable thumb pressure and palming massage to penetrate deeply into the muscles, energy channels and acupuncture points.
The word “Shiatsu” comes from “Shi” (finger) and “Atsu” (pressure) which involves comfortable pressure applied to the “acupuncture” points and energy channels in the body.
I use the Hara, in the abdomen, to diagnose and treat both physical and emotional conditions. I then recommend, using the Five Element System, correct foods to balance and nourish your unique body.
Shiatsu is a treatment like no other. It addresses the root of the problem as well as alleviating manifesting symptoms.
In Shiatsu and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the body is classified into yin/yang organ pairs and meridian pathways which correspond to emotions, flavours, seasons and colours. There are no good or bad foods simply foods which do and don’t suit us at this time. It’s all about connecting with the body, seeing what it wants and loving ourselves more.
Treatments usually last for 1 hour 20 minutes.
Conditions frequently helped by Shiatsu
- Headaches and Migraines
- Fatigue and insomnia
- Menopausal hot flashes
- Backache, Neck and Shoulder tension
- Stress and anxiety
- Digestive disorders such as IBS and Candida
- Joint pain & reduced mobility
- Cravings, compulsions and addictions
In health, a balanced condition prevails and the Qi (energy) flows smoothly along meridians (pathways). But when the body is weakened by lifestyle, emotional stress or injury, the Qi no longer flows smoothly, becoming deficient in some areas and excessive or stuck in others. The aim of shiatsu is to rebalance the persons Qi (energy). Shiatsu will relax tight, stiff and fatigued muscles but more than a simple massage it will also stimulate the auto-immune system, keeping the body in its optimum state.

“Jo has helped me over a number of years. her knowledge and skills are second to none. She has eased severe Torticollis many years ago. She also has supported my system through recommended diet and shiatsu after Gall Bladder removal. A session with Jo is an escape from the madness of day to day life. It allows my body a chance to relax and recover. I always feel the benefits straight away but as the week continues I can see it more. My energy levels are up, my mood is brighter and I am calmer. Jo has a wealth of experience and has a natural ability to read a person’s needs. she tailors each session to your needs at that moment. Jo has supported me through two pregnancies and the postpartum period too. with all the changes in hormones and the physical body. I couldn’t recommend Jo more. She puts you at ease as soon as you walk through her door with her warmth and kindness. No matter your concerns. An ache in your back, reflux, low mood… Jo can help so reach out. I promise one session and you won’t look back!”
