Shiatsu, often described as acupuncture without needles, balances the physical and emotional body. It uses comfortable thumb pressure and palming massage to penetrate deeply into the muscles, energy channels and acupuncture points. I use the Hara, in the abdomen, to diagnose and treat both physical and emotional conditions. Shiatsu is a fantastic Holistic treatment which addresses the root of the problem as well as alleviating manifesting symptoms.
I specialize in the energy of food in Traditional Chinese Medicine – using that source of everyday energy to strengthen and heal. By using this website, you can gain insight into the connection between how you feel and the food you choose.
In Shiatsu and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the body is classified into yin/yang organ pairs and meridian pathways which correspond to emotions, flavours, seasons and colours. There are no good or bad foods simply foods which do and don’t suit us at this time. It’s all about connecting with the body, seeing what it wants and loving ourselves more.

Shiatsu – What is it?
The word “Shiatsu” comes from “Shi” (finger) and “Atsu” (pressure) which involves comfortable pressure applied to the “acupuncture” points and energy channels in the body.
In health, a balanced condition prevails and the Qi (energy) flows smoothly along meridians (pathways). But when the body is weakened by lifestyle, emotional stress or injury, the Qi no longer flows smoothly, becoming deficient in some areas and excessive or stuck in others. The aim of shiatsu is to rebalance the persons Qi (energy).
Shiatsu will relax tight, stiff and fatigued muscles but more than a simple sports massage it will also stimulate the auto-immune system, keeping the body in its optimum state of health and well-being, physically, mentally and emotionally.
What is the connection between Shiatsu and Conscious Cooking?
Food and drink are the ultimate transformers. We take them in and they become our own. It is their energy that enables life. They are at the heart of our being but often taken for granted as they become a purely functional part of life.
In Chinese Medicine, food and drink are used for dietary healing and support. The body is classified into organ pairs and meridians (pathways) these correspond to emotions, flavours and seasons. So when I treat the body through acupressure and manipulation of specific meridians I also recommend specific foods that further support the body and bring it back to balance.
For example a woman who has just had a baby or has small children may be nurturing others more than nurturing herself. This will put the stomach/spleen energy under pressure which in turn often leads to a craving for sweet foods such as chocolate (for more information see “conscious cooking” page). The Shiatsu treatment itself would be a perfect way for the mother to gain support and care for herself whilst at the same time receiving food recommendations that would appease the sweet cravings.
What to expect in a treatment
Shiatsu is usually given on a padded mat on the floor through loose, comfortable clothing and uses no oils. It works on the same principles as acupuncture but uses thumb pressure and palming massage to penetrate deeply into the muscles and energy channels. It begins with a hara diagnosis which will pin point exactly which organs and meridians need bringing back into balance. Also included are stretches and rotations of the limbs and joints all in order to balance the flow of energy in the body.
Shiatsu and Conscious Cooking treaments use Zen Shiatsu hara diagnosis techniques and a full body shiatsu treatment to give personalised recommendations as to how specific food and drink will work to support your system and/or treat a condition.
A session costs €75 and usually last for 1 hour 15 minutes, which is time on the mat and for specific dietary recommendations and recipes. Treatments are an extremely relaxing and enjoyable experience; releasing tensions and supporting the body as it detoxes, transforms and regenerates. Special offer – course of 7 @ €65 each.

Healing for the body and the soul! Jo is absolutely amazing, not only as a practitioner but as a person too! I cannot recommend her highly enough! if you have never tried Shiatsu, please don’t hesitate a moment longer! Visits to Jo for treatment are a priority! We service our cars and our bodies are way more important than a car! Healing and relaxation and de-stress are just some of the benefits of a Shiatsu treatment with Jo! 5*****
I had the privilege of having a Shiatsu treatment with Joanne recently. She is both deeply caring and professional. She combines an intuitive, powerful, shiatsu treatment with supportive nutritional advice in a safe nurturing space. In one session I felt more alert and energised than I had for many months. I come with a complicated and serious medical history that she received in a professional and sensitive way. I felt heard and supported and for the first time in many months, I felt hopeful on leaving her treatment room. I highly recommend Joannes healing work, a treatment with her is a gift to both body and soul. Enjoy!
Jo has helped me over a number of years. her knowledge and skills are second to none. She has eased severe Torticollis many years ago. She also has supported my system through recommended diet and shiatsu after Gall Bladder removal. A session with Jo is an escape from the madness of day to day life. It allows my body a chance to relax and recover. I always feel the benefits straight away but as the week continues I can see it more. My energy levels are up, my mood is brighter and I am calmer. Jo has a wealth of experience and has a natural ability to read a person’s needs. she tailors each session to your needs at that moment. Jo has supported me through two pregnancies and the postpartum period too. with all the changes in hormones and the physical body. I couldn’t recommend Jo more. She puts you at ease as soon as you walk through her door with her warmth and kindness. No matter your concerns. An ache in your back, reflux, low mood… Jo can help so reach out. I promise one session and you won’t look back!
