Useful Information about Lanzarote
Lanzarote is part of the Canary Islands and is the easternmost of the Canary Islands, in the North Atlantic Ocean. Although it rises to only 2,198 feet (670 metres) at Peñas del Chache, it is mountainous, with numerous small craters and extensive lava flows. The climate is arid, with the little rain that falls coming mainly in winter.

About 1730 the appearance of half the island was altered by volcanic eruptions. The last violent activity was in 1824, but crevices in the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) still emit sufficient heat to fry eggs.Timanfaya National Park (20 square miles [51 square km]) was established in 1974. By remarkable dry-farming methods cereals, vegetables, wine grapes, and other crops are produced on terraces on the steep sides of the volcanoes.
Arrecife, the chief port, has a fishing and fish-preserving industry. Tourists are drawn to the island by its fine black-sand beaches and sport fishing; the service industry dominates the economy. The preservation of the island’s natural resources has been of growing concern as a result of the influx of tourists and a glut of construction. Regular sea and air services connect Lanzarote with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Graciosa, a volcanic islet (9.5 square miles [25 square km]) lying 1 mile (1.6 km) off northern Lanzarote, has a few hundred inhabitants, mainly fishermen. Area 307 square miles (795 square km).
Lanzarote is part of Spain, and therefore is part of the EU, and its currency is the EURO (€). There are plenty of ATM machines on the island and most places take credit/debit cards.
Is there anything to do on Lanzarote if I want to extend my stay before/after Retreat?
You can absolutely spend time on the island before or after the Retreat, there is plenty to see and do. From the art galleries, futuristic buildings and event centres designed by César Manrique, the artist who moved to and fell in love with Lanzarote and was responsible for stopping building over 3 storeys high being built on Lanzarote so as not to spoil the views, the volcanic landscape, Timanfaya National Park, Teguise Market on a Sunday.
Fascinating attractions like Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verdes are great places to visit. Don’t miss out the Mirador del Río, a spectacular viewpoint – also built by Manrique – blending harmoniously with its surroundings and providing breathtaking views over la Graciosa and the other islets of the Chinijo archipelago archipelago… just to name some of the superb sights you will see here!
There are plenty of hotels, apartments and AirBnBs to choose from on the island, car hire is very reasonable and the island itself is small with excellent roads, so exploring would be recommended before or after Retreat.
Is Lanzarote duty-free?
Lanzarote is part of Spain and therefore the EU, and therefore Euros (€) are the currency on the island. However there is lower tax than other EU countries and no duty on various items.
- The local tax, equivalent to VAT, is much lower than most of Europe at just 7%
- There is no duty on tobacco, alcohol or perfumes on the island
How To Get There
it is your own responsibility to get to Villa Amatista.

Taxis cost c. €30 for this journey and can be pre-booked or there is a taxi rank at the Airport. You can pre-book your taxi HERE
