Fibromyalgia – Reasons why and solutions

After speaking at the large Fibromyalgia Summit a couple of weeks ago I was more convinced than ever about the causes of chronic conditions such as Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Lupis, Parkinson’s etc. Somewhere along the line, all the people I have encountered at my clinic or at talks, seminars and in everyday life have experienced extreme stress at some point and that has been the trigger for their condition.

From the Holistic Cookbook, Good Food: Better Sex I categorize the 3 stressors as follows

  • Environmental – medication including painkillers, cigarettes, alcohol, pollutants and toxins in the air, food and external environment including additives and preservatives in food, cleaning products, cosmetics and any plastic derived products.
  • Physical – Accidents, injury, operations & overdoing things, pushing past your physical limits
  • Emotional – Grief, loss, abuse and trauma

In the reality of this bittersweet life who hasn’t experienced the grief and trauma of being alive? At some point in life we all experience grief and some kind of trauma but why it develops into a chronic condition is not established. I believe that conditions become ripe when a collection of all 3 stressors creates a perfect storm and the body begins to break down. Perhaps the death of a loved one plus a car accident and perhaps a virus happen at once.  At this point the body is simply unable to cope, it cannot release the stress from the body, it produces an acid environment and the body begins to attack itself.

From a Chinese Medicine point of view fear, stress and trauma deplete the kidney energy meaning the body stays on high alert, oversensitive to any impending or imagined danger. When the kidney is weak it cannot support the Liver, which is responsible for the healthy flow of energy in the body. When energy cannot flow, it backs up, gets stuck, and it stagnates. Wherever energy (chi) stagnates, there is the potential for pain.

So what can we do? To address the symptoms of pain we can clear the liver of environmental toxins and ensure that is working in tip-top conditions. Green is a good place to start as it is the colour for the Liver, therefore all green foods will assist the organ and it’s partner the Gall Bladder. Secondly, we can assist the body on a regular basis to smoothly transition from the sympathetic nervous system to the parasympathetic nervous system. Both part of the central nervous system, the Sympathetic is responsible for the fight or flight while parasympathetic is referred to as rest and digest. When we enter the parasympathetic nervous system and relax, the body begins to split cells for regeneration, and healing begins to happen. Circulation improves, digestion and absorption are smooth, even thinking and moods become clearer.

Loving-kindness Meditation is a great place to start the body to enter the parasympathetic nervous system. It imprints the mind that all is well and, despite past experiences, the world is a benevolent place. It means that we set up a pattern of self-love which is really where all the release of trauma and healing begins. At a cellular level, this creates a positive, ph balanced environment in which the DNA can split and reproduce healthy cells for support and growth for a healthy body. This retreat will teach you simple recipes that will enliven your kitchen, heal your body and ensure you fall in love with your food, all over again.

Within this retreat, we will address symptoms such as inflammation, joint paint, weight gain, fatigue, bloating, sluggish, swollen, painful digestion. It is possible to make changes to how you feel, using the food you eat, gentle exercise, breathing exercises and potent acupressure points.

Come, rest and restore; learn and have fun with a small intimate group in wonderful surroundings of Brittas Bay, surrounded by mountains and the sea. The grounds are full of mature trees and paths that lead you to a secluded beach, perfect for a nourishing and relaxing retreat.

Saturday

8.30 Morning Detox Juices and Do- In with Jo

Do-In is inextricably linked to Shiatsu. It includes several exercises aimed at achieving a free flow of Ki (life energy) and activating Ki. In Do-In we stretch meridians and massage points with the support of our breathing. Through Do-In you ensure that your own energy increases and you learn to experience what Ki is and how it manifests itself in your body. Being in connection with your body will enable you to feel balanced therefore improving your own health and wellbeing.

I will be teaching the Makka-ho which are a series of 6 stretches which sedate and tonify the organs of the body. They remove blockages along the meridian channels and improve the flow of Chi (energy) throughout the body.

The potent acupressure points covered this morning will be for increasing energy and flow within the whole body. We will concentrate on points on the head that will relieve brain fog, headaches, stiffness and pain.

10.00 Breakfast

Baked Fruit Porridge with dark mixed berries. Oats are a warming tonic for the Ki. They strengthen the Spleen and benefit the nervous system and bones thereby supporting kidney function

Fresh fruit, Yogurt and Honey, Seeds and raisins

11.00 Cooking Class

Using principles of Chinese Medicine we will discuss physical symptoms such as widespread pain, extreme sensitivity, stiffness, fatigue, poor sleep, brain fog, headaches, IBS and how with diet we can make positive changes

9.00-9.30 Evening Loving Kindness Meditation and Mind Calming Mantra

A mantra is the essence of sound and vibrates within the body. In Tibetan Buddhism, the prana, the chi, rides on the breath so when you chant a mantra you are charging your breath and energy with the energy of the mantra, thereby calming and stabilising the mind and body. Directing the mind through Loving Kindness Practice will also relax the body, connective tissues and the nervous system
