Cooking up a healthy appetite – Irish Examiner Article

Cooking up a healthy appetite – Irish Examiner Article

Finding the right foods can make all the difference, writes Clodagh Finn.
It is only when you stop to think about it that you realize how food labels have become a constant, though unwelcome, guest at the kitchen table.
I don’t mean the ones that come off with the wrapper, but the judgemental little name tags that we mindlessly attach to everything we eat – ‘good’, ‘bad’, ‘guilty pleasure’, ‘indulgent’, ‘sinful’, ‘superfood’, and on it goes on the food-fad seesaw…

How to Eat what you Love

How to Eat what you Love

Sometimes food can become the enemy – not eating this, staying away from that – gluten is bad, potatoes are bad, sugar is bad, no carbs, low carbs, only carbs. Is it clean food, is it good for my gut, is it good for my brain – it’s all very overwhelming and choosing what to eat can become a minefield. The fear of choosing the wrong thing and facing the consequence of bloating, swelling, gas, reflux, eczema, colitis, psoriasis and/or cramps makes food into a demon to be tiptoed around.

However in my experience, as a Shiatsu practitioner, food is rarely the cause of the problem yet it is the painful trigger of an underlying condition. By interpreting the triggers and listening to what the body is telling us, we can go deeper, understanding and treating the cause. In Chinese Medicine, it is seen as treating the branch and the root.

About 20 years ago everything I ate made me hurt. The stomach cramps were incredibly painful and I would be doubled over unable to move for hours. I didn’t know what it was or what foods were triggering it, for a while it seemed like everything set off the agony.

For months I tried all sorts of things to fix it. In the end, it turned out that I had picked up the helicobacter virus whilst visiting Mexico.

I eventually cleared the stomach ulcers but it left me with a sensitivity to many foods, especially vegetables. After many soups, my stomach got stronger and I was able to eat a wider variety of crunchy foods.

Now the only thing I can’t really eat is broccoli and Chinese takeaways. Of course, this doesn’t mean broccoli is a bad vegetable or that Chinese takeaways are terrible.

It just reminds me that I have to be loving to my tummy, to not overdo it with cruciferous veg, raw green juices or monosodium glutamate.

Food can be a marvellous way to really listen to our bodies. To understand their individual needs and love and care for them as a mother would her child. Of course don’t keep eating things that don’t serve you and make you ill, learn to listen to your body and use the system of Traditional Chinese Medicine taught by Shiatsu & Conscious Cooking to interpret symptoms and see food as medicine. It is a path to a life full of delicious love.

Your relationship with food mirrors your relationship with life so love the food you choose to eat. Choose it, prepare it and devour it with sumptuous, sticky, lickable vigour.

I’ll share with you a recipe that got me through the ulcers and has strengthened my stomach since. Even now when my stomach feels crampy or my oesophagus tingly from reflux, I make this dish and my stomach is soothed. I will be teaching how to make this dish at the “Love what you eat” Retreat – Living wheat and Gluten free taking place in Wicklow (1hr from Dublin) 19, 20 & 21 October 2018. – More details below the recipe

Herby Millet

Millet is the most alkalising grain which is easily digested by the stomach and spleen. This is so comforting and grounding; mouthful by mouthful you can feel your stomach relaxing. Firstly chop and gently fry an onion for a couple of minutes in 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 25g of butter. Then add 2 cloves of chopped garlic, a large handful of chopped parsley and 250g millet. Stir in on a gentle heat making sure all ingredients are coated with oil then add the 750ml of stock, a very big handful of chopped sage, a few sprigs of thyme, flakes of seaweed and salt. Cover the pot bring to the boil and allow to simmer for 20-30 minutes, adding more stock or seasoning if needed.

I encounter many people and treat many clients who choose not to eat Wheat and Gluten. It suits them and their energy levels. Brilliant……. Fantastic ……..however some of them have lost their love for food. It has become a chore, feeling that there is no pleasure if there is no toast. So I have created a weekend where you can fall in love with food all over again. I will be teaching a great range of recipes from

  • French Onion & Miso Soup
  • Simple pressed salad
  • Asian coleslaw with Avocado Segments
  • Herby Millet with Shiitake Mushrooms
  • Wheat & Gluten free brownie
  • Anti Inflammatory tea with fresh Turmeric

And fantastic Buckwheat Pancakes which are a great substitute for wraps and quick sandwiches

These recipes will help with treating the symptom. They offer fantastic, loveable alternatives to the food that no longer serves you. To accompany treating the symptom we will also look at the root cause of the sensitivities to foods and offer solutions to turn of the nervous system, to encourage self-love and build ultimate health.

To decrease sensitivity in the body and lessen the triggers it is essential we can learn to self-soothe and that we know how to turn off the flight and flight nervous system so the body can rest and restore. This is how we treat both the branch and the root – approaching the body as a holistic system. True health does not come from taking the correct medication but from allowing the natural forces within us to flow.

To this end, there will be guided Loving Kindness Meditation practices, walking meditations through the wooded paths and down to the secluded beach.

Each morning I will be teaching the Makka-ho which are a series of 6 stretches which sedate and tonify the organs of the body. They remove blockages along the meridian channels and improve the flow of Chi (energy) throughout the body.

I will also guide you through a series of major Acupressure points in the body for Chi flow, health and wellbeing.

The retreat will be completely vegetarian and will have a focus on balanced, healthy eating – demonising food and making it the baddie is a missed opportunity to work out what is actually going on with our bodies. Rather than limiting my palate, reducing my taste buds and constricting happiness, I’d rather fling out my arms open wide, expanding into full health with a mixed bowl of deliciousness, still curious, still in love with food and life.

More thoughts on Love

More thoughts on Love

In my last post, Cleanliness is next to Godliness, I talked about feeling at peace and in love with a watery world whilst on holiday in Morrocco. Well, I have been keeping that feeling going now I’m back in Dublin, bathed in water in an altogether different wet and rainy way. I have realized that its the feeling I have to keep going not the object of attention.

Even though having the object of loving attention present helps fortify and strengthen a feeling of love, it is not essential. In fact is imperative that it is not essential. If our feeling of Love rests upon an external object then we are bound to have our hearts broken. The love is like a muscle that must be exercised and used at every given occasion to ensure the feeling.

I have been in love this week with yellow walls, Dolly Parton, the rain, the sunshine, my trip to the builder’s providers and Temple street children’s hospital with my eldest son. During all of them, I have been in love. It does help that I have things that remind me effortlessly of this feeling, a foot rub from my youngest son, music that uplifts me, the thought of my lovers dry, warm, soft skin, can all trigger the memory and the feeling when things are challenging.

Sometimes I wake up in a funk, thinking “oh wow I’ve got to this all over again” or “really is this it?” clearing away breakfast bowls and crunching rice crispies underfoot is not the exciting life I had in mind.

But I am training my brain. It’s not good for me to lie there and dwell in the funky feeling. I need to transform that emotion. I do that by either getting up and hugging my children or lying there and remembering the times when they were half my height and snuggled up beside me. I remember a Hammam, a holiday or a lovers touch, anything to get the day going in a feeling of gratitude for what is.

Once that love muscle is activated, I find it easier to view the mundane or troublesome from a place of gratitude.

I have found it essential to set the bodies thought patterns and neural pathways to feeling open-hearted, no matter what the external situation. This week I recorded the Loving Kindness Meditation for the Supported Online Course, Reducing pain, increasing flow for Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue.

It believe, that after suffering severe trauma or stress, the body can develop neural pathways and thought patterns, saying the world is bad, it’s malevolent and dangerous. In this way the body and its energetic pathways contract, preventing openness and flow.

This overprotection impedes healing and eventually, under constant imagined or real threat, the body creates an acid environment and begins to attack itself, causing chronic conditions such as Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Trigeminal neuralgia, Arthritis, Lupis, and other autoimmune diseases.

In Shiatsu & Conscious Cooking we use body treatments, diet, breathing practices, lifestyle changes to change neural pathways and support healing. Why not try, with us, changing the way you think and see if it changes your condition.

See your life as completely supportive, feel it’s benevolence and no matter what choices you make you will be loved. The most reliable but perhaps difficult lover to receive from is yourself. The free guided meditation is a place to begin change – small steps = big results.

Where to start – begin with something you love – as I suggested in my last post that was water. Perhaps it’s a walk on the beach, falling asleep on the sofa, a half hour catching up with friends or looking at the sky and the spring shoots in your garden. Pinpoint something you love and do it, feel it and keep that feeling going.

Even when faced with pain, difficult people and drama, keep your cool and remember the loving feeling. An amazing man, Eric Forsmark, who was a powerful mentor in my life, says “you must dig where you stand”.

Which means there’s no point in thinking that if you were somewhere else you would be happier. If you were a different person, if you were skinnier, richer, taller, in less pain, less tired, less anxious, less wobbly you would be happier. It sounds a bit self-righteous, especially if you are in pain or anxious for someone to say just be happy about it.

From my experience, the only way for things to change is to accept what is, with gratitude, hold a vision of what you want in your life and work towards that vision. All the time loving the journey. Its all about loving where you are and being excited about what is to come.

There is more to come but I think I will leave it there for now. If you want to read more about this train of thought and see where it leads then enter your email on the home page and you will receive the next post direct to your inbox.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness

Cleanliness is next to Godliness

I’m just back from a fantastic week in Marrakesh, Morroco. The food was amazing and the sunshine was a blessing from what has been a cold, wet Dublin spring. On the sunny terrace, I had plenty of time to rest, write and paint, all my favorite things. My next best, other favorite thing is massage, any treatment that involves touch works for me. So I took a few visits to Hammams. These were a revelation.

I had visited a Turkish bath at 19 in Istanbul but now approaching 50, tired and a little world-weary I was really going to make the most of these visits. I lay in the steamy hot rooms, I was washed by women head to toe, scrubbed, rubbed and oiled, I felt like a queen. This got me thinking, this got me feeling …… how easy it is to love myself, accept myself and feel at ease with myself, when I am treated like this; When I allow and give time for these body rituals.

In Marrakesh, there are segregated public Hammams which people use at least once a week. There is a religious element to the Hammams as Water plays a central role in Islam. Before praying a person must perform a small ablution, “wudu” and each week people visit the Hammam for washing and massage.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said ‘cleanliness is half of faith’. http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/galleries/wudhu/

This culture of a daily, water ritual is a way of preparing to meet God. It seems part of everyday life to use water as a way of making a spiritual connection. For me, the water revealed a deep feeling of self-love. That in this place, at that time, I was loved and I completely loved myself. I felt that the world was benevolent, supporting me, loving me. Brought to my own inner self, where I felt at ease, everything was just perfect.

Before going on holiday I was really struggling and arguing with an ex, the father of my twins. I was tied up in knots from the stress and overthinking regarding an argument we had had, but in this place of self-love, I could completely drop all of the mind-melting, stomach cramping, intestine lurching thoughts. He could be him with his opinions and I could be me with my choices. This complete acceptance of myself is truly healing.

I do believe it also tangibly affects those around me. The kids felt the lack of tension within me and so they are more at ease. They approached me with their concerns as I had dropped wanting their father to behave a certain way which allowed them the freedom to be themselves. Holding on to the trauma of the argument and distress would have brought real, tangible illness and dis-ease to my body.

In this way, it is my belief that self-love is crucial when dealing with chronic long-standing illness. When trauma is held in the body, it can create an acid environment which can lead to many health problems such as Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Osteoarthritis, Nerve Damage, Heart Disease and some Cancers. So it’s essential to cultivate and connect with a practice of self-love.

There are 3 major stressors for the body which create trauma

  • Environmental: toxins and pollutants
  • Physical: trauma such as accidents and abuse
  • Emotional: responses to situations

But why not first find a way to feel self-love. Perhaps use water; everytime you have a shower feel the life-giving benevolence of the water as it cascades over you, rinsing away any blemishes or self-loathing you feel and restoring you to a whole, perfect, godlike person, cleansed and forgiven, capable of following your own unique path, without the judgements of others, full of roaring, passionate love for yourself and the choices you make.

Fibromyalgia Health & Wellbeing Summit

Fibromyalgia Health & Wellbeing Summit

During this fantastic event on 12th May, I will be giving two talks along with recipe demonstrations and taster giveaways – there’s lots of other interesting stuff on offer too such as Shiatsu, sleep advice, Tai Chi and keynote speakers – all for only €20

Fibromyalgia, a chronic disease that causes pain and swelling, is difficult to treat with western medicine “Fibromyalgia symptoms are only about 30% amenable to current pharmaceutical strategies on the market,” says Kathleen Holton, Ph.D., MPH, lead author of Potential Dietary Links in Central Sensitization in Fibromyalgia………

Why not try an alternative way of looking at the condition? Shiatsu & Conscious Cooking is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and looks to address the cause of the condition as well as treating and alleviating symptoms.

The symptoms of Fibromyalgia in Chinese Medicine can be treated as a condition of the Liver and this talk aims to give a brief overview of this aspect including flavour, colour, season and emotions that correspond to this organ in Chinese medicine.

It will also touch on the possible source of the condition within the Kidney/Bladder. It is in no way prescriptive but more about providing tools to ask “how is the body, how am I feeling and what do I need right now?”

The Liver and Gallbladder are connected to the Spring life force in our bodies which governs flexibility, regrowth, and easy flow. It is a powerful energy for effective action, enabling the unfolding of our life’s purpose. The Ligaments and Tendons are governed by these organs so too is metabolism and energy levels.

However, in our overactive society, the Liver/Gall Bladder can become overheated or blocked causing frustration, pain, and stagnation. An easy way to address this is by stimulating the Liver and decreasing its congestion. A gentle detox, which happens naturally in the Spring, will encourage and support the Liver to regenerate and cleanse.

In this talk, we will

  • Discuss effective, gentle detox for the body
  • Learn a variety of foods that increase energy and decrease pain
  • Discover which foods are best avoided
  • Understand how to alcalyze the body reducing pain and stagnation

Food for our very Essential Energy

Food for our very Essential Energy

A short video about our essential energy – our DNA energy and how to protect and preserve it

Is jing the same as chi? – No, Chi is energy – we can get this from the air we breath, the food we eat and the way we interact with life. Jing is the essential energy we are born with (our DNA) we can preserve and protect it, we can fritter it away but we cannot make more – for a wonderful weekend away covering food and practices specifically for the Jing visit: https://joannefaulkner.ie/wellness-retreats/

More Sex and important numbers

More Sex and important numbers

In one of my previous blogs, I talked about Sex and the Number 42 – about how every 7 years a strong hormonal change takes place in the body to kick-start the reproduction ability of the body. At 7 we lose our baby teeth, at 14 we enter puberty at 21 we are in prime baby making stage, at 35 our estrogen can begin to decline and at 42 we enter perimenopause and 49……….. here comes menopause.

These are general figures used in Chinese Medicine to indicate the changes in our hormonal body but this idea that, as women, our reproduction ability and energy comes to a halt as we hit menopause is a fallacy. Our body is constantly reproducing.

We make plasma cells daily; colon cells refresh after four days; we make a whole new skin every 2-3 weeks; white blood cells take more than a year to regenerate, and it takes an average of 10 years to grow an entirely new skeleton. The energy that it takes to make reproduction happen is called Jing in Chinese Medicine.

It’s the energy that we are born with, our DNA if you like, that we inherit from our ancestors, no matter what we eat or drink we cannot build upon this energy, it is our constitution.

However, we can deplete this energy through overwork and pushing ourselves past our physical limits; By over emotional situations especially fear and anger and by overstimulating foods such as caffeine, sugar, and drugs (prescription or recreational).

How we have treated out physical and emotional body will show up every 7 years at the times of hormonal change. You may find longterm constitutional illnesses such as eczema, hayfever and arthritis clear up at these pivotal points on our timeline. I personally “grew out” of acute hayfever at 35 which had begun at 7.

I used my understanding of Chinese Medicine to make changes in diet and lifestyle coming up to this transitional time. I am 50 this year and am very aware of supporting my Jing so that transition into menopause requires no medication or sweat filled, insomniac nights.

The Jing is considered one of 3 treasures in Chinese Medicine and it is stored in our Kidneys so it is vital that we keep these energetic organs healthy. Jing determines the management, storage, and usage of chi/energy.

As I mentioned earlier the Jing moves in 7-year cycles, we cannot add to it but we can support it with good foods such as Eggs, Royal Jelly, Bee Pollen, Seaweeds, Almonds, Blue Green Algae, Aduki Beans, Bone Broth and Goji Berries. With good practices such as Qi Gong, Yoga, Tai Chi, we can use breath and body to harness feelings and become emotionally flexible.

Teaching, experiencing, encouraging and nurturing the feminine energy within us, the Conscious Cooking Classes and Tai Chi/ Qi Gong sessions can effortlessly improve sexual health, bringing a balance between passionate fire and flowing water.

Using food, exercise and potent acupressure points we will keep the meridian channels open and flowing. We will experience and share how to prevent leaking our precious Jing and how to nurture and support it so that we prevent accelerated aging.

In a simple weekend, understand the clear connection between our emotions, the food we choose and how that directly affects our health.

Hello and Welcome

Hello and Welcome

I am delighted to offer

  • Shiatsu Treatments
  • Online Video Courses
  • Cooking Retreats
  • Demonstrations and Events
  • Colourful Cookbooks

All of which will help you put together physical symptoms, emotional moods and the food we eat.

Shiatsu & Conscious Cooking is all about helping you recognize physical symptoms and understand their cause. Shiatsu Bodywork & Chinese Medicine will guide you with what we eat and drink everyday to gain energy, strengthen and heal.

In Shiatsu and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the body is classified into yin/yang organ pairs and meridian pathways which correspond to emotions, flavours, seasons and colours. There are no good or bad foods simply foods which do and don’t suit us at this time. It’s all about connecting with the body, seeing what it wants and loving ourselves more.

Shiatsu uses comfortable thumb pressure and palming massage to penetrate deeply into the muscles, energy channels, and acupuncture points. I use the Hara to diagnose and treat both physical and emotional conditions. Shiatsu is a Holistic treatment which diagnoses and treats the root of the problem as well as the manifesting symptoms.

Joanne is the Author of “Shiatsu & the Art of Conscious Cooking” which is a cookbook with recipes, meditations, acupressure points to suit your mood, stop cravings and alleviate physical symptoms.

By understanding the body as a whole system in Traditional Chinese Medicine we can understand why certain emotions and conditions create cravings and desires for certain foods. If you would like to find out what food suits you today simply click here

Self-administered acupressure or Chinese Medicine is not a substitute for visits to qualified healthcare practitioners.

Knowing how to treat yourself and your loved ones with complimentary therapies like acupressure can be greatly beneficial and convenient. However, for serious and chronic conditions, you’ll want to visit an Shiatsu therapist / Acupuncturist or other qualified healthcare practitioner who can develop a treatment plan based on your unique medical history and combination of symptoms.
